Limestone is used in the manufacture of paints, plastics, glass, and paper. Selected grade are used for animal, abrasive blasting, acid soil amelioration, and colliery 'stonedusting'. Source of lime; netralising agent, filler, and extender in rubber, plastics, paints; opacifying agent in paper; fortification of bread; putty; tooth powders; antacid; whitewash; Portland cement; sulfur dioxide removal from stack gases; metallurgical flux; analytical chemistry; carbon dioxide generation (laboratory).

3.1 Exposure Standards

TWA (inspirable dust): 10 mg/m3 for calcium carbonate. TWA (respirable dust): 0.1 mg/m3 for silica (crystalline) quartz.

General, local exhaust ventilation as necessary to control any air contaminants, to within their TWA limitations.

Respirator type - advisable to wear a dust/mist respirator (class P1) complying to AS 1716 (1991). Prot4ective gloves can be used, but are not necessary. Eye protection: safety glasses recommended with side shields. Clorhing: overalls or similar protective clothing.
